Mavic Crossmax Shoe – Review

Mavic's Crossmax Enduro range includes one of the better shoes we have had the pleasure to ride in a while. Simply named, the Crossmax shoe was reportedly co-developed as a racing-specific option by the likes of Jerome Clementz and Fabien Barel. The materials and construction are tougher than most offerings in this range, which lends much credibility to that claim. The lugged soles are made from sticky Contagrip rubber and molded into a pattern that facilitates quick pedal entries. A pronounced rocker aids walking or scrambling up unridable trail sections, and two retention strategies ensure than the shoe fits snugly without hot spots. Both the heels and toe areas are reinforced, which is a must for high-speed runs on technical and rocky terrain. Mesh inserts...

Trek Ticket S – Review

Slope bikes are purpose built machines that have been designed with one specific goal: allow a rider to get through a set of massive jumps while spinning, flipping, and generally doing things that don't look possible outside of an Xbox or Playstation. Trek's 100mm travel Ticket S has been put together for exactly those sorts of moments, and C3 team riders Brandon Semenuk and Brett Rheeder have ridden the Ticket to a number of high profile podium finishes. The frame shown here is the limited edition R-Dog version that sports Ryan Howard's preferred Americana colours, but you'll likely have more luck getting your hands on the all-black version, which is probably okay with anyone outside of the United States. Ticket S Details • Intended use:...

Enduro Challenge Madeira – 2015

Since the starting years of mountain biking in Madeira, politics and environmentalists were basically in control. A book of rules, maybe written when Madeira was discovered back in 1400-something, is truly outdated, especially when outdoor sports are constantly evolving. This year, things are slowly changing. Our government started opening their strict boundaries realizing that mountain biking and other nature related sports, keeps tourism flowing and locals happy. Since the beginning of 2015, Enduro Racing is no longer illegal in Madeira and it's currently supported and approved by the regional tourism department. I have to be pretty clear that it's still a hard battle. Businesses emerge from the approval and legalization of mountain biking in Madeira, no doubt about that, and everyone has it's own importance,...

First Impressions: Shimano XT M8000

Shimano’s  XT M8000 group won’t be hitting shelves until later this summer, but there were several bikes equipped with the parts at the Riva Bike Festival in Italy over the weekend for select journalists to sample. We hope to have a more comprehensive review when parts become available, but in the meantime, here are a few thoughts from our first ride on M8000. Each test bike was set up with the 2×11 drivetrain, but will also be available in single and triple configurations as well. The side pull front derailleur delivers serious power with reduced effort–almost as little effort as a rear shift. With front shifting so precise, it’s no wonder Shimano doesn’t want to give it up. We have yet to test the illusive...

First Look: Easton Heist Wheels

Easton debuted their ARC rim a few weeks back, and with the $99 USD hoop being available in 24, 27 and 30mm inner widths, as well as both 27.5'' and 29'' diameters (but no 26''), there's a good chance that one of the six different options will suit how many of us ride our mountain bikes. But while the rim's reasonable sticker price makes a lot of sense, just how many of us will be looking at building up a custom wheelset? The answer is not many, which is why it doesn't really come as a surprise to see Easton offering their pre-built Heist wheelset using the very same rim. Complete wheelsets will be available in both 27.5'' and 29'' sizes, as well as with...
